Save money on wedding dresses without sacrificing style

Designer discount: dresses at Oxfam’s specialist bridal shop in Southampton
Designer discount: dresses at Oxfam’s specialist bridal shop in Southampton
While the origins of Kate Middleton's wedding dress are shrouded in mystery, it's unlikely she bought it from a charity shop, Chinese factory outlet or bargain bucket sale.
Yet, according to experts, increasing numbers are spurning the traditional expensive dress. Instead, brides are turning to cut-price alternatives or DIY in the quest for a perfect look for their big day.
The typical cost of a UK wedding is more than £21,000, with the average dress making up £1,000 of that figure. But Lucy Elliott of budget wedding blog, The Chief Bridesmaid, believes leaner economic times have sparked a backlash against the "big fat wedding" extravagance of the noughties from brides-to-be.
"It feels like there's a general movement away from the over-the-top Wag-style weddings we saw five years ago," she says. "I wonder if brides have been deterred from huge, flashy extravaganzas by a combination of overkill on TV shows and the recent economic turmoil. Brides seem to be looking for simpler, more understated dresses. That means that dresses that are not necessarily traditional options are becoming a more attractive option."
Nicola Ray of Cheap Wedding Success, another blog, says: "The internet has opened up a world of choice for brides which wasn't as accessible even five or 10 years ago. Today we're seeing more and more people ordering online from suppliers in China or with other overseas options."
In such a tough environment, traditional bridal outfitters could be hard pressed to keep up, especially if they fail to justify a hefty price tag with high end products and good service, Ray believes.
"A £900 dress is a premium product and there can sometimes be a degree of snootiness from the staff in those shops," she says. "There will always be money around for the high-end dresses but if you are a middle-market wedding dress shop owner, with all the competition around at the moment you are going to struggle."
Elliott has not observed a big increase in buyers turning away from traditional bridal shops. But she says: "There seems to be a growing discontent around the treatment brides receive from wedding suppliers in general."
Ordering from abroad In recent years, websites have sprung up allowing brides to order cut-price dresses directly from factories in China. With dresses typically retailing for about £120, such suppliers can beat the prices in traditional bridal shops by hundreds if not thousands of pounds.
However, Nicola Ray sounds a note of caution. "There are some good reputable sellers, but there are a lot of bad ones out there as well. I haven't heard of people being scammed but sometimes the results have been disappointing."
As a precaution, brides should make sure they see fabric swatches if possible, Ray advises.
In addition Katie Fewings of online wedding magazine Ethical Weddings adds that the extremely low prices being charged for such a sophisticated product raise questions about the working conditions for the dresses' manufacture.
Sample sales According to Elliott, bargain sample sales have experienced a surge in popularity among cost-conscious brides. "Most commonly, brides who are trying to save money are still going to wedding dress shops but buying ex-shop sample dresses at big reductions, often around 70% of the retail price. This allows them to get the full 'wedding dress experience', but they are not having to bust their budgets in the process."
Brides are also increasingly opting for bridesmaids' dresses, which are low in price in comparison with traditional dresses, Elliott says.
Charity shops Fewings says charity shops are also becoming an increasingly fashionable choice among buyers in search of a bargain.
"A couple of years ago it didn't cross many brides' minds to buy their dress from a charity shop but now it's becoming a far more popular option," she says. "We're seeing a real trend in 'upcycling', where brides revamp a cheap secondhand dress."
Fusty fabrics and musty smells have been banished in the specialist bridal outlets that have sprung up around the country. On a visit to Oxfam's specialist bridal shop in Southampton, Guardian Money came across the odd yellowing veil and scuffed pair of shoes. But the dress collection was good quality, with prices typically between £150 and £300.
With some of the dresses coming straight from designer shows, sharp-eyed buyers should be able to uncover the odd gem. Money spotted one virtually unworn designer dress reduced to £250 from its original £1,800.
Volunteer shop assistant Krystyna Higginson says that the shop, which last year took £30,000 in revenue, has had a particularly busy six months. "We get people from all walks of life coming in from across the country," she says. "They want to give something to charity but save money at the same time. The dress has often only been worn once at a wedding or at a catwalk show but is hundreds less than it would be in a normal shop."
DIY Finally there is the option of making your own dress. But Gill Arnold, who runs bridal dressmaking courses in Solihull, warns that this is not a choice for the fainthearted.
"You do need a certain level of skill and plenty of time to make a wedding dress," she says. "It tends to be mothers of the brides who are coming on the courses, as opposed to the brides themselves."
Even if you only do part of the work yourself, the savings can be significant. Miriam Moules, 31, believes the handmade dress she is creating for her wedding in September will cost her no more than £100. Moules, an office temp, aims to buy the material and cut the patterns herself. She will then pass the bulk of the sewing on to a local seamstress before completing the embroidery herself.
She says: "I visited a couple of wedding dress shops with my friends and realised that I didn't want to go down that route myself. This allows me to do something a bit more creative and save money at the same time."

Online poker sites shut down by FBI

For Mark Buchan, it was a bit of extra income to supplement his writing and teaching. Most people lose when they play poker online, but not this classics professor. On a good day, he says, he could make hundreds of dollars an hour from the comfort of his New York home.
But the FBI has ended his fun. A major crackdown on poker sites operating in the US has left British-born Buchan and many thousands of others with frozen gaming accounts.
Buchan noticed the action when he couldn't log on to his usual site. Popular sites – fulltiltpoker.com, pokerstars.com and absolutepoker.com – all have notices stating: "This domain name has been seized by the FBI." Buchan said: "Something had to happen at some point. But for them to do it like this was really, really surprising."
Gaming is, and always has been, a hot topic in the US. Sports betting online is illegal and last year David Carruthers, former chief executive of London's BetOnSports, was jailed for 33 months for "racketeering conspiracy".
Online poker seemed to inhabit a greyer area. Not any more. Preet Bharara, the US attorney for New York, has charged Raymond Bitar, Full Tilt's Ireland-based chief executive, and other online poker execs at rival sites, including Isle of Man-based PokerStars and Costa Rica's Absolute Poker, with bank fraud and money laundering. He followed it up with a civil suit seeking to recover $3bn (£1.8bn) in allegedly ill-gotten gains.
The defendants "concocted an elaborate criminal fraud scheme", said Bharara, "tricking" some US banks and "bribing" others to assure the continued flow of billions in illegal gambling profits. In their "zeal to circumvent the gambling laws", the defendants were flouting the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, brought in by George Bush, and had engaged in massive money laundering and bank fraud, he said. "Foreign firms that choose to operate in the United States are not free to flout the laws they don't like simply because they can't bear to be parted from their profits," added Bharara.
In a statement, Full Tilt said: "Mr Bitar and Full Tilt Poker believe online poker is legal – a position also taken by some of the best legal minds in the United States. Full Tilt Poker is, and has always been committed to preserving the integrity of the game and abiding by the law."
Angry poker players – who argue that their game is one of skill, not luck, so it is not gambling – took to the web to express themselves. The attorney general's Wikipedia entry was changed: "Bharara is a naturalized American citizen who spends what little free time he has bullying the homeless on the streets on NYC. Furthermore, he is wasting time and money chasing down poker sites to compensate for his small genitalia," it read.
But for Buchan the game is over, online at least. He said other sites would step in and offer poker online in the US, even if it is illegal, but he would not be playing them.
Poker and gambling experts say two forces are driving the crackdown: morality and a desire to collect tax dollars. "Sure people are worried about the effects of online gambling," said Michael Burke, the author of Never Enough: One Lawyer's True Story of How He Gambled His Career Away. Burke, a self-decribed gambling addict, who lectures on gaming addiction, said he had noticed a huge increase in the numbers of people who want to talk about problems with online gambling. "The real issue the government has is that they don't know how to tax it," Burke added.
He said studies had shown that social isolation and the constant availability of online poker was creating a new generation of potential problem gamblers, lured by stories of fortunes to be made. The "myth", he said, was reinforced by the $8.5m Joe "the kid" Cada won at the 2009 World Series Poker championship. "What about the thousands of others who lost money?" said Burke. "A very small percentage of gamblers becomes addicted but it's still a very large number of people," he said. "I believe if it's legalised there will be real problems."
Mark Griffiths, professor of gaming studies at of Nottingham Trent University, said online gambling has specific problems: the frequency of opportunity, anonymity and "disinhibition" that people experience online can lead to a loss of control but, he added, online games are unlikely to present problems for the majority.
"There are severe alcoholics out there and nobody is suggesting we return to prohibition," said Buchan, the classics professor, who condeded: "I was playing a little too much anyway." He is writing a guide to the classics and a book on death bed love scenes. "Now I can get on with some work," he said.

Zipcode lottery

From day one, American colonists were split on their attitudes to gambling. Puritans in Massachusetts Bay outlawed the possession of cards, dice and gaming tables – along with dancing and singing. Over in Jamestown, settlers were setting up lotteries and wishing they'd invented the scratchcard.
A patchwork of regulations has since sprung up to cover the country and its attitudes. New Orleans became a legal gambling Mecca in the 1800s, but locals were not above lynching card sharps. Las Vegas began its rise in the 1930s, New Jersey's Atlantic City legalised casino gambling in 1978, and some native Americans were allowed to open casinos on their land in the 1980s.
The new battleground is online gambling – a "scourge on our society" according to Republican congressman Bob Goodlatte. George Bush passed legislation aimed at hampering it in 2006 but many states would like toit legalizse itd so they can impose taxes punters and firms.
The last crackdown on online betting came in 2006 and led to the jailing of several gaming executives, including the UK's David Carruthers

What is Health Insurance?

What is health insurance and why do I need it? Health insurance protects you and your family from a financial hardship due to medical expenses in the untimely event that you are injured or become ill. There are four types of health insurance, you may need just one or you may need a combination to ensure you have the most insurance coverage possible. It is best to evaluate each type of insurance to obtain an accurate account of which type will best suit your needs.

Individual medical coverage is designed for people who do not receive this type of coverage through their employer or family. Medical supplement insurance is designed for the elderly who contribute to Medicare however, desire additional coverage to supplement expenses that Medicare won't cover.

Hospital income insurance is intended to compliment your main health insurance program. This coverage provides a prearranged daily benefit amount for unforeseen expenditures that accompany extended hospital stays for a covered sickness or injury.

The fourth type of health insurance coverage is disability insurance, which comes in three different forms. Disability insurance protects you in the event you become physically or mentally disabled due to an accident or illness. This type of insurance is designed to provide you with your living expenses if a disability prevents you from working or earning a living.

Disability income insurance is used as a principal income substitution plan or as an enhancement to your income continuance or group disability plan. This plan is devised to keep you economically secure during hard times by paying monthly wages directly to you when you are unable to work. Mortgage disability income insurance is designed to protect your most precious possession, your home. This policy specifically provides you with money meet your mortgage obligation if you become totally disabled. Individual credit disability insurance will help you pay off loan payments in equal monthly installments. In the event that you become totally disabled this plan will make payments on your behalf directly to the financial institution

There are many things to consider when contemplating which type of insurance is most beneficial to you and how much coverage you really need. If you are working and receive insurance through your employer investigate how much coverage you are really provided in terms of health care. Then ask yourself the following series of questions:

وهناك العديد من الأمور التي ينبغي أن تضعها في الإعتبار عندما تفكر في أي نوع من التأمين أكثر نفعاً بالنسبة لك، وما هو حجم التغطية التي تحتاجها حقاً. فإذا كنت تعمل وتتلقى تأميناً خلال صاحب العمل، فافحص مقدار التغطية الحقيقية التي تتاح لك من ناحية العناية الصحية. ثم اسأل نفسك هذه السلسلة من الأسئلة:

Does it cover pre-existing conditions, genetic conditions, chronic or life threatening conditions? Does it just cover accidents that occur in the workplace? How much money will it shell out before it is considered at its limit? Will it cover the cost of transplants or long-term care? What about family members, how much coverage will your insurance plan provide them? Then think about your lifestyle. Do you drink or smoke? Is hypertension a family heirloom?

Are you at high-risk for diabetes, a heart attack or stroke? (life insurance) Are you accident-prone or do you often take unnecessary risks? (liability insurance) Do you work late hours and drive a considerable distance to and from work? Are you the primary breadwinner and if so how will the bills be paid if you are out of work due to an unforeseen disability caused by an accident? Consider all of these things then ask yourself if you and your family are adequately insured.

Syrian tanks and troops move into Deraa

At least five people are reported dead as troops backed by armoured vehicles and tanks moved into the southern Syrian town of Deraa, a centre of the rebellion against the regime of the president, Bashar al-Assad.
Witnesses also told of snipers firing from rooftops in an escalating crackdown on protests that also saw attacks in the coastal town of Jabla and a dawn raid in the Damascus suburb of Douma. There were fears of more violence in another southern town, Nawa.
Syria has closed its southern land border with Jordan, according to Jordanian officials. An official told Reuters the timing was "related to what appears to be a major security operation that is taking place right now".
Thousands of troops, backed by armour, appeared to be making pre-emptive strikes in areas where there were no continuing demonstrations. Until now, the regime's military and police operations have been staged in response to protests.
It has been increasingly difficult to verify claims relating to the violence since Syria has banned most foreign media and sought to impose communication blackouts in areas most affected by the uprising.
A witness in Deraa said: "We need international intervention. We need countries to help us." He added that he had seen five corpses after security forces opened fire on a car.
Another witness said people were using mosque loudspeakers in Deraa to summon doctors to help the wounded as busloads of security forces and troops conducted house-to-house searches, causing panic in the streets.
"They are entering houses. They are searching the houses," he said. "They are carrying knives and guns."
In Jabla, a witness reported the presence of security forces in camouflage uniforms, some with their faces covered, and masked gunmen dressed in black. There were 13 deaths there on Sunday according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
"Jabla is surrounded by security forces," the witness said, speaking by telephone. "The dead are in the mosques and the houses. We can't get them out."
There was also violence in Douma, a suburb of the capital, Damascus, where authorities were making sweeping arrests. "The security has been heavy here since Friday, but overnight they cut off parts of the city from each other," a witness told AP. "They set up checkpoints to separate the quarters."
A human rights campaigner in the capital told Reuters: "There are injured people. Scores have been arrested. The security are repeating the same pattern in all the centres of the democratic uprising. They want to put down the revolution using the utmost brutality."
More than 350 people have been killed since the unrest began in Syria five weeks ago. The worst single day for casualties was Friday, with 112 deaths, according to human rights groups. On Sunday, 13 people died in Jabla as security forces moved into a Sunni quarter after protests, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Syrian state TV said nine members of the security forces had been killed in the violence of recent days, seven in clashes with "armed gangs" in Nawa. On Monday, there were reports of bulldozers and military vehicles heading there.
Thousands of people in the town called for the overthrow of Assad on Sunday at a funeral for protesters killed by security forces. Electricity and communications were cut off in parts of the town and residents, some armed, erected barriers in the streets. "Long live Syria. Down with Bashar!" mourners chanted during the funeral. "Leave, leave! The people want the overthrow of the regime."
Meanwhile, Syrian writers issued a declaration denouncing the crackdown. It was signed by 102 writers and journalists, in Syria and in exile, representing all the country's main sects. It called on Syrian intellectuals "who have not broken the barrier of fear" to make a clear stand.
"We condemn the violent, oppressive practices of the Syrian regime against the protesters and mourn the martyrs of the uprising," it said.

Islam - The Easy Way

" "

Islam - The Easy Way
by  Khurram Murad 'God desires ease for you, and desires not hardship' (2:185);
'Truly with hardship comes ease'
(94: 6);
'God will assuredly appoint, after difficulty; easiness'
(65:7);
'Whoso fears God, God will appoint for him, of His command, easiness'
(65:4);
'We shall speak to him, of our command, easiness'
(18:88);
'God desires to lighten things for you, for the human being has been created weak'
(94:28).
Introduction
One of the terms used by the Qur'an during the early Makkan period to describe Islam was Al-Yusraa, or 'The Easy Way'. This is simply because Islam was, and is the natural way of life. Indeed, whatever is natural for human beings should be easy for them in every way, hence cause them to gravitate towards it easily, and consequently bring harmony, peace and tranquility to their lives. Since the Quran is the book upon which the Islamic way of life is built, then the Quran has to be easy to understand and follow-it is 'The Easy Way'.
This view that Islam is easy to understand and practice, is one which is derived from the primary sources of Islam. In the Quran, Allah comforts us by continuously reassuring us that He desires for us ease not hardship, despite the seemingly formidable trials and tribulations that we may sometimes face. He says:

'Do those deeds which you can do easily, as Allah will not get tired [of giving rewards] till you get bored and tired [of performing good deeds! ... and the most beloved deed to Allah is the one which is done regularly even if it is little'
(Bukhari).
In addition to the Quran, the Hadith literature is also replete with references exhorting us to adopt a balanced and simple approach to life. Prophet Muhammad (saw) has advised us: 'This Deen or way of life is easy But if anyone overdoes it, it gets the better of him. So keep to the right course, approximate to perfection, rejoice, and ask for help in the mornings, the evenings, and some of the latter part of the night' (Bukhari). The Prophet (saw) has also praised those who adopt a moderate approach to 'ibadah or worship. Ibadab, he said, should be done with freshness of heart, not an exhausting routine carried out in spite of fatigue.
(7: 42) and 'He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion' (22: 78).
Islam is not Complex
Islam is not a way of life that is complex or difficult. Rather it is the human being who practices Islam who often makes it difficult-and then, complexity overtakes him so that eventually he is unable to cope with even the simplest of tasks. That it is possible for every person to understand and practice Islam is assured by the following three principles:
Firstly, the basic beliefs contain no mystery and are therefore easy to comprehend. Every tenet in Islam is subject to analysis and inquiry. Moreover, Islam does not present stumbling blocks to the mind. Islam does not present concepts or ideas which the intellect cannot grasp. Even the simplest of minds can understand its basic beliefs. It is therefore not surprising that its beliefs are universal.
Secondly, the most important and stringent obligations ordained upon Muslims are easy to undertake. That is, the duties and obligations laid down by Allah have been graded. And, it is the wisdom of Allah that the greater the importance He has attached to any act, the easier it is for everyone to accomplish it. Thus, for example, the five daily Salat (Prayers) and Sawm (fasting) during the month of Ramadan are compulsory upon everyone, since they are within every-one 5 reach to accomplish. Zakat (almsgiving) and Hajj (pilgrimage), on the other hand, though fundamental pillars of Islam, are not compulsory upon everyone. If it were made compulsory upon everyone, then those who did not possess the financial means would be unable to carry out these duties. In such cases, it would not have been possible for everyone to practice Islam in all its facets. Therefore, these duties are obligatory only upon those who have the means to do so.
Thirdly, there are provisions for derogation when it is genuinely not possible for someone to fulfill an obligation. For instance, if a person is genuinely unable to stand up and pray, then he is permitted to sit down or even lie down and pray. Similarly, if there is no water available to perform the wudu or ablution before prayer, then one can make tayammum, which is a simple dry ablution performed by using clean earth or dust. Therefore, even when there appear to be difficulties, if one looks closely at the Shari'ah or Islamic legal code as a whole, one will find so many rules relating to derogation that enable one to practice Islam very easily-and this is the case regardless of the problem: political, economic or simply personal. Indeed, throughout the Quran various provisions have been made to ease things for travelers, for the sick, for pregnant or nursing women, for the old and for the poor, for on no soul does Allah place a burden greater than it can bear
Therefore, as long as one possesses the basic tools-a sound knowledge of what is stated in the Shari'ah regarding a particular matter and an awareness of the responsibility for ones own actions-a person may decide for himself when to derogate from the standard. Thus, although according to the Shari'ah it is haram (or unlawful) to eat pork, if someone is on the brink of starvation and the only food available is this pork, then one can decide for oneself whether and when to consume this haram meat in order to survive, and thereby derogate from the standard. Of course, this does not make the pork halal or lawful, but neither will one be punished for committing a haram or prohibited act, so long as it is necessary for one's essential well being as a Muslim
